“It’s always the small pieces that make the big picture.”

Complete this puzzle to reveal a plate recovered from a shipwreck.

This dish from Vietnam was made in the 15th c. and sat on the ocean floor of the Dragon Sea for almost 500 years. It had been lost in a shipwreck and was recovered in the 1990s off the coast of Hoi An, Vietnam.

In the center of the dish there is a mythical creature called Qilin in Chinese and Kỳ lân in Vietnamese. The Kỳ lân is surrounded by swirling clouds. This mythical creature is composed of many animals, like the body of an ox or horse, the head and mane of a dragon, a coat of multi-colored scales, and fur covered horns or antlers.

This may sound scary, but these creatures are considered the most gentle of animals. Seeing one is considered an omen of prosperity and serenity

  • What mythical creatures do you like?
  • What do you think this dish was used for?
  • If you could design a dish, what images would you decorate it with?
