The overall concept

  • The digital resources provided in this website link works of art in the BMA’s Asian art collection to classroom curriculum 
  • These resources can be used together to form a teaching unit, or they can be used as stand alone supplemental resources
  • All resources can be used in the classroom, while some (such as videos, quizzes, and interactive images) can be used as homework or for distance learning

How to search 

There are multiple ways to search for resources that match your classroom needs.

You can search by: 

  • Grade Level
  • Region of Asia
  • Academic Subject
  • Resource Type (video, coloring sheet, interactive image, lesson plan, etc. )
  • Or a combination of all four of the above

OR, you can bypass all of the search categories, and simply go straight to viewing every resource we offer. Simply skip over grade, region, subject, and resource and click the GO button.

Types of resources

  • Art Activities – classroom art projects inspired by Asian art in the BMA’s collection
    • Making Matters – Learn how to make art objects the way people did hundreds or even thousands of years ago!
  • Coloring Sheets –  coloring enhances motor skills, calms the mind, and inspires creativity
    • Coloring Outside the Lines – Viewing a work of art in a museum setting is much different than the way it would have originally been displayed or even the way someone would display an object in their home. The objective for this coloring activity is not only for the student to color the work of art, but to draw an imaginary environment around the object.
    • Illuminate – The word illuminate has three definitions: light up or brighten, decorate or adorn, and clarify or reveal. The objective for this coloring activity is not simply for the student to color the work of art, but to illuminate it!
    • Mandalas – Circular mandalas provide a focus for meditation with a central point—a point from which all things are possible. From this sacred center generates infinite possibilities and potential.

  • Interactive Images – Allows students to explore symbolism and iconography of an object at their own pace and interest level
  • Lesson Plans – STEAM lesson plans that link art in the BMA’s collection to other academic subjects. 
    • Let’s Write! – In conjunction with viewing The 5 W’s of Art video for an object, students will think critically about why objects were used in the past, write a descriptive sentence about the sculpture, write sentences with correct capitalization and punctuation, and write a story with a clear beginning, middle, and end.
  • Quick Guides – background information on Asian religions and cultural practices 
  • Videos (some with quizzes!) 
    • The 5 Ws of Art – Learn the Who, What, When, Where, and Why of Asian works of art in the BMA’s collection. This series comes with an online quiz to take following the video.
    • Talking About Art – It’s not always easy to start a conversation around a work of art. Learn a few key talking points about unique works of Asian art in the BMA’s collection.
